Scholarships

Ƶappoffers a variety of Scholarships for students in Secondary and Boarding. We are open to applications for 2026 from October 2024.

ƵappAnglican School may, at its discretion, award scholarships that provide financial assistance towards the cost of tuition and/or boarding fees. Scholarship award is made by a committee chaired by the Principal, based on criteria set by the School. Please ensure that the application requirements for each Scholarship are met as outlined below, and a separate application is made for each scholarship.. All scholarships applications are to be submitted by the online portal except the Gloria Thew Boarding Scholarship and the Indigenous Boarding Scholarship. Please refer to the application forms for details.

Allrounder Scholarships

Recognising a student’s participation and/or meritous achievement across fields such as education, leadership, community service, sport and/or Christian endeavour.

The William Cowper Scholarship is named after the first Anglican Minister in the region, William Macquarie Cowper (1810 -1902) who was a revered and respected figure in the Church of England. This scholarship recognises a student’s participation and/or merits and achievement across fields such as education, leadership, community service, sport and/or Christian endeavour. William Cowper was the first Australian-born Anglican clergyman who worked hard and travelled widely, holding services around the New England region including Tamworth.

This scholarship can be awarded to a student in any year of Secondary schooling. It would be expected that while holding the scholarship the student would actively participate in the areas of school life that were the basis for the awarding of this scholarship.

Supporting documents requested

  1. A hand written letter from the student supporting their scholarship application outlining contribution to school community (for all scholarships).
  2. A supporting letter of Reference from an Elder, Minister, teacher, coach, instructor, tutor etc (non-relative).

Academic Scholarship

The Academic Scholarship is based on academic merit as demonstrated through ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) testing. The ACER Scholarship Test is used by approximately 200 Independent Schools across Australia to identify academically able applicants for the award of a scholarship. The tests are not curriculum based and do not test the ability to retrieve learned knowledge, nor are they diagnostic. They are designed to rank order applicants, finely differentiating the top end of performance. The ACER Scholarship Test requires applicants to demonstrate a range of skills such as the ability to interpret, infer, deduce and think critically.

ACER produces these tests, supplies them to schools, marks applicants’ papers and reports applicant results back to the schools and parents.

Ƶappwill host an ACER Test on Saturday, February 22, 2025.

Registration has opened and is $170. Practice papers are available for purchase.

Foundation Scholarships

The ƵappFoundation has been instrumental in enabling students from diverse backgrounds to access quality education and resources. Through these scholarships, we are expanding our efforts to nurture young talent and to provide more opportunities for personal growth and academic achievement. The addition of these scholarships will not only benefit our students but also reinforce our school’s impact on regional education.

Mary England Scholarship (Melville '43)

The Mary England scholarship was established in honour of Mary England (Melville '43). She loved her time as a Boarder at what was then Tamworth Church of England Girls’ School. After leaving she continued to put her heart and soul into the School she loved. She established the Sydney group of Old Girls and was a devoted supporter of Ƶappup until the time of her passing in 2018. Cross-generational links were promoted and supported by Mrs England. She was ahead of her time and encouraged many alumna to participate in the life of the School beyond their own education, maintaining a strong connection with their ‘alma mater’. The Drawing Room in ƵappHouse is named in recognition for the significant contribution of Mrs England.​

This Scholarship is awarded to an applicant who is the child of ƵappAnglican School alumni, who demonstrates the potential to make a significant positive contribution to the life of the School across a range of activities that may include academic studies, music, sport, agriculture, Christian involvement, public speaking and debating.

  • The student must be the child of alumni and entering into Year 7
  • The application must demonstrate evidence of positive attitude and application to school involvement
  • The awardee will be expected to actively participate in the areas that were the basis for the awarding of this scholarship
  • The award will be made as part remission of tuition and/or boarding fees.

The application requires a handwritten letter of application from the student, detailing:

  • Support for their scholarship application outlining contribution to school community.

A supporting letter of Reference from an Elder, Minister, teacher, coach, instructor, tutor etc (non-relative).

Ruth Munro Scholarship

The Ruth Munro scholarship is named in memory of an inspirational teacher at Ƶappwho taught for over 40 years. Ruth impacted hugely on the lives of generations of Ƶappstudents teaching English, Ancient History and Latin. She was one of those ‘one in a million" individuals who made a difference to the lives of generations of students, inspiring a love of language and the joy of learning. One alumni wrote of Miss Munro, “She touched my heart, fed my soul and challenged my intellect. When I left Ƶappshe made me feel special in a way that I will never forget. If only I could be as special and magnificent a woman as Ruth Munro, I would be humbled.” Miss Munro’s impact is also remembered through a volume of her poetry published posthumously called, ‘The Book of Ruth’.

This is awarded to applicants who demonstrate the potential to make a significant positive contribution across areas such as in public speaking, debating, drama, English & History, as well as school contribution and engagement and involvement.

The Louie Jean Mercer Scholarship ('36)

Specifically supporting girls from rural and regional Australia entering Years 10, 11, or 12, this scholarship celebrates the memory of Louie Jean Mercer, an alumna whose school spirit and academic prowess left a lasting mark on our community.
This is awarded to applicants to support and encourage girls from rural and regional Australia to access quality education at ƵappAnglican School by alleviating financial barriers.

  • The scholarship is designated for girls entering Years 10, 11, or 12.
  • A once-off payment of $5,000 will be applied toward the recipient's school fee account

The application requires a handwritten letter of application from the student, detailing:

  • Their desire to join ƵappAnglican School.
  • How they plan to contribute to the school community.
  • Their personal connection to and understanding of what it means to live in rural or regional Australia.
  • A photo or image to accompany the application

And a reference letter attesting to the student's character and their enthusiasm for joining the Ƶappcommunity.

Sir Roland Grieve and/or Lady Margaret Grieve Scholarship

Open to all students, this scholarship honors the legacy of Sir Roland and Lady Margaret Grieve, whose contributions to the medical field and to conservative politics were significant. Their commitment to community and education continues through this scholarship. To assist new students in transitioning smoothly into the Ƶappcommunity by easing the financial burden of expenses. The scholarship recognises students who are enthusiastic about joining Calrossy, regardless of academic achievements.

Award Details:

  • Six scholarships annually, divided equally among genders (three for males and three for females).
  • Each scholarship is valued at $1,000
  • Applicants must be a new student to ƵappAnglican School.
  • Entrance into any year from Year 7
  • The scholarship can be awarded in addition to other scholarships or as a standalone support.

The application requires a handwritten letter of application from the student, detailing their reasons for wanting to join Ƶappand how they plan to contribute to the school community.

And a reference letter attesting to the student's character and their enthusiasm for joining the Ƶappcommunity.

Karalynne (Lynne) Redknapp Bursary ('57)

The Karalynne (Lynne) Redknapp Bursary is a poignant homage to the cherished memories and legacy of Lynne Redknap, who attended the Tamworth Church of England Girls' School, now known as ƵappAnglican School, as a boarder from Papua New Guinea from 1951 to 1957. This scholarship is designed to support students who are active members of the Anglican Diocese, reflecting Lynne’s deep connection to her faith and the school community.

Award Details:

  • Applicant must be an active member of a Church community in the Armidale Anglican Diocese.
  • The scholarship is open to students applying to enter any year level at ƵappAnglican School, with priority given to critical transition years such as Year 7 or Year 10.

The application requires a handwritten letter of application from the student detailing:

  • Their desire to join ƵappAnglican School.
  • How they plan to contribute to the school community.

And a reference letter from their local Anglican Minister or Youth Minister, attesting to the student's character and enthusiasm for joining the Ƶappcommunity.

Music, Creative & Performing Arts Scholarships

Based on excellence in one or more areas of Music, Drama, Dance, or Visual Arts, as demonstrated via audition, written submission, interview, and/or submission of a portfolio of work and ability to contribute to the school in the field(s) of interest.

Music and Creative & Performing Arts

These Scholarships are offered for students in the following disciplines and entry stages;

  • Music: for students entering into Years 7, 9 & 11
  • Visual Arts: for students entering into Years 9 & 11
  • Dance: for students entering into Years 7, 9 & 11
  • Drama: for students entering into Years 7, 9 & 11

Music

It is a requirement that, while holding the scholarship, the student would continue to participate fully in the musical life of the school and study music as an elective subject from Year 9.

As a guide the expectation is for students entering into:

  • Year 7: a minimum standard of AMEB 3rd Grade or equivalent in performance experience is required
  • Year 9: a minimum standard of AMEB 5th Grade or equivalent in performance experience is required
  • Year 11: a minimum standard of AMEB 6th Grade or equivalent in performance experience is required

Private musical tuition remains the responsibility of the individual student.


Visual Arts

Entering into Year 9 a student must present the following to be considered:

  • Major artworks undertaken in Years 7 and 8 which should demonstrate skill, or an intuitive handling of materials, and originality or uniqueness
  • Visual Process Diaries which should reflect a willingness to engage in the recoding of artistic practice in a thorough and unique or more original level
  • School reports for Visual Arts in Years 7 and 8
  • Outline of any workshops or outside tuition undertaken by the student
  • A letter from the student explaining why they are deserving of the scholarship

Entering into Year 11 a student must present the following to be considered:

  • Body of Work undertaken in Years 9 and 10 which should demonstrate skill, or an intuitive handling of materials, and originality or uniqueness
  • Visual Process Diaries which should reflect a willingness to engage in the recoding of artistic practice in a thorough and unique or more original level
  • School reports for Visual Arts in Years 9 and 10
  • Outline any workshops or outside tuition undertaken by the student


Dance and Drama

Provide a statement indicating years studied, standard reached, disciplines and any other relevant information in support of application.

It is a requirement that, while holding the scholarship, the student would continue to participate fully in school performances and within the creative arts area of the school in addition to studying in this area as an elective subject from Year 9.

Private tuition remains the responsibility of the individual student.

  3. Applicants are asked to attend an audition for Music, Dance and Drama or submit a portfolio of work if applying for a Visual Arts Scholarship.

Indigenous Scholarships

Indigenous Boarding scholarships are awarded in support of indigenous students and their families, in pursuit of academic and extra-curricular opportunities, in line with Abstudy scholarship criteria. These scholarships are;

  • For students entering any year as a boarder
  • Part remission of tuition and boarding fees
  • Is time dependent on successful application for Abstudy funding.

Boarding Awards

The School may at its discretion offer financial assistance known as an ‘Award’, towards boarding fees.

Gloria Thew Boarding Award—a means tested award based on financial needs.

ICPA Boarding Award—an award based principally on providing support to isolated rural students and their families to enable academic and extra-curricular opportunities at Calrossy.

Students granted either a Scholarship or an Award are recognised as influencers of their peers and are subject to ongoing monitoring of behaviour and/or participation in their field of recognition. The School issues Scholarships and/or Awards on the expectation that the student remains enrolled at Ƶappuntil the completion of their secondary education. Should the family of a Scholarship or Award student advise of their intention to terminate enrolment, unless there are exceptional circumstances, they are required to reimburse the School for the value of their Scholarship/Award discount received to date. The Principal will be the arbiter of any such request.

Scholarship or Award discounts do not apply to any co-curricular fees or service levies.

Scholarships and Awards are monitored and reviewed annually. Unsatisfactory participation or behaviour can result in their termination.
